Oxygen and Fish

Fish need to be able to breathe. Active fish usually require more oxygen than inactive fish. Salmon and trout are very active and are constantly swimming. As a result, they require more oxygen than other species.

Oxygen dissolves into moving water ("lotic") more readily than it dissolves into nonmoving (standing) water. If you are fishing a lake, look for inflowing streams or springs. If you find a spring or inflowing stream, fish it first as it will supply both oxygen and food to the fish waiting below.

This list is given in the form "common name" and "Genus species". For more information on each fish species, click on the species name.
